Church Websites (Sidekick): Links and Buttons: How to Make Navigation Tabs That Link to Other URL Addresses

Sometimes it's nice to have a menu option serve as a link to a different website or even a specific media file, like a PDF document.

For example, let's say that you have a ministry that has a website of its own and you would like to make it easy for people to quickly navigate to it. Or, perhaps you have a website that is in a second language that you would like people to easily find. Let's discover how you can easily create redirect links within your website's menu. If you are wanting to make a dead link click here.

Note: While in the Menus area, DO NOT create a new menu, as that will overwrite your Main Menu and cause those pages to disappear from view on your site.

Let’s create a navigation link that points to a different website.

And check it out, it opened to a separate tab so that you don't lose where you were. Want to find out how? Of course you do. Let's begin.

Click on the advanced menu. Hover over appearance, then click on menu. Click on custom links.

Enter the website URL that you would like it to be directed to. Enter the navigation title you'd like it to have. Now click add to menu.

It shows up here on the bottom. You can now drag it up to where you want it. Now click on the inverted triangle.

We need to make it so it opens up in another tab. There should be a checkbox right here that allows you to select that as an option. It's not here so we need to add it.

Go up to the top of the page and click on screen options. Select link target. Now we can scroll back down and here it is.

So select it. Then click save menu. To check our work, simply click on your site name right here.

Now click on the menu item and see, there it is. To go back to your site, just click on the tab to the left.
