At times, you may find yourself needing to make your website temporarily unavailable so that you can do some major changes or a series of small changes without people coming and seeing the unfinished work before its ready.
This tutorial will show you how to install a maintenance plugin on your site and then use it.
- To install the plugin, login into your website, hover over the Plugins dashboard option and select Add New.
- In the Keyword field, type the word maintenance
- You will be presented with multiple plugins that can provide a maintenance mode feature but we typically recommend WP Maintenance Mode for its ease of use and reliability. Simply select the Install Now button for the plugin of your choice.
- After a brief installation process, the Install Now button will update to an Activate button which you should select when available.
- After it has been activated, hover over the Settings option on the left-hand side of the dashboard and go to WP Maintenance Mode
- Feel free to go through each tab to make any changes you want to the plugin's settings and, if you don't feel comfortable changing something or if you aren't sure what it is, then don't worry about changing it. Once you're done with the settings, mark the radio button for Activated.
- Lastly, be sure to select the Save Settings button to ensure that the maintenance mode has been enabled.
- Once you are ready to disable maintenance mode, simply return to the WP Maintenance Mode settings, select the Deactivated radial button, and click on Save Settings.
